My name is Rene Hinojosa and welcome to History OnPoint. The content of the topics will be History related and the focus, for the most part, will center on events that are a part of the larger picture. Whereas lots of History related channels on YouTube focus on the major events on the Historical timeline, the content of my channel sheds light on the deeper layers.
We will analyze the content thru various lenses and take into consideration the sociological and human implication of the people that are the subject of discussion.

This is the first episode of a two part series which centers on the Raid of Brownsville, TX by Juan N. Cortina. In this new video installment we will immerse ourselves and learn more about the fascinating story of Juan Nepomuceno Cortina, a man who had the distinction of raiding and invading a US town on this side of the border in 1859. It is a confusing, yet controversial story, fraught with much debate because there are those scholars that have painted a picture of Cortina as a bandit and a horse thief, seen as the man responsible for the "reign of terror" on the border. Conversely, others him in a different light, as a man who stood up to tyranny and oppression. As I delved deeper into the story of Cortina, his actions certainly provoked terror on the border, there was some horse stealing attributed to him but those actions were reactive because of the changing circumstances, as Tejas transitioned into becoming a territory of the United States. Questions? I have one:  Was Juan Cortina credited with founding La Raza Unida Party? Most people are convinced that La Raza Unida Party, a mutual aid society, originated in Crystal City, TX but some scholars disagree. Cameron County is considered the birthplace of La Raza Unida Party and Cortina as its founder, at least by noted scholar of the Lower Rio Grande, Carlos Larralde.

This is the last part, of a two part video series in which we examine a unique phenomenon in Texas History termed “filibustering.” Filibustering grew out of the chaotic political conditions that occurred in both Mexico and the United States. This period of time, beginning from 1848 to about 1860, would see private armed organized groups whose primary motivations were to invade a country such as Mexico, with hopes to gain a permanent foothold or annex more territory to the United States. In this video, we learn more about Carvajal himself and what circumstances led to his participation to filibuster in Mexico. We will explore how US foreign and domestic affairs were conducive for people like Carvajal to violate neutrality laws; the agreements of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; Article 11; additionally, we will also explore the military engagements that pitted Carvajal against Mexican troops and civilians, and much more. This first part, of a two part video, in which we examine a unique phenomenon in Texas History termed “filibustering.” Filibustering grew out of the chaotic political conditions that occurred in Mexico and the United States. This period of time, beginning from 1848 to about 1860, would see private armed organized groups whose primary motivations were to invade a country like Mexico, with hopes to gain a permanent foothold or annex more territory to the United States. Filibusterers were individuals who attempted to invade Mexico in armed groups, often with a small militia force. One noteworthy filibustero of that time was Jose Maria J. Carvajal. Carvajal. He would emerge as character closely associated with this activity throughout the northern provinces of Mexico.
